CJ emailed me this evening asking if I could remove the threaded comment feature that came out with the latest edition of WordPress. I really really don’t want to do that since the threaded comments can eliminate a lot of confusion on who a comment is directed at. However, I’m willing to ask y’all for further input.

I’ve already changed the threaded options to limit the nested levels so we don’t have to deal with comments that have one word per line. That is why a bunch of comments on CJ’s Let’s Call It A Victory post have gotten all out of wack. Sorry, nothing I can really do there.

The other complaint I saw was having to wade through all the comments to see what you missed. I can understand that, so I call that a valid complaint. However, I think it is an even trade off for being able to reply directly to a comment and avoiding any confusion on what someone was talking about at some point way up the chain of comments.

I’m also researching the ability to allow logged in users to disable threaded comments. If that is possible, I’ll make it happen. Then you would just have to log into the site to see threaded comments disabled. That is the ultimate solution as it is the best of both worlds.

So sound off in the comments.

  1. I’m fine anyway, but if the threaded comments are to be kept, maybe just limit it to about 3 replies or so.

    • I’ve got it set to 4. I think that is good for now.

  2. Quoting works fine. I know WordPress allows for the xhtml quoting code cuz I have it on mine. Then again, no one uses that feature & people just use italics to quote. Either way, no comment nesting on CC. But, I don’t allow for “debate” either. If people are gonna argue, they can take it elsewhere. Ha!

    • Comment nesting is a really great thing. I really hope everyone can get used to it if I’m not able to allow individual users to disable for themselves.

  3. I love comment nesting.I vote for keeping them.

    • Thanks for the input, brother.

  4. I like the comment nesting, too. I’m voting FOR!

  5. I like the comment nesting too! It is easier to view! My vote is for it! Thanks Marcus!
