You’re about to lose what little gun possession you’re already entitled to. President Obama’s home state is pushing legislation that will make it mandatory for every owner of a firearm to purchase and maintain a $1,000,000 liability insurance policy.

Provides that any person who owns a firearm in this State shall maintain a policy of liability insurance in the amount of at least $1,000,000 specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person. Provides that a person shall be deemed the owner of a firearm after the firearm is lost or stolen until such loss or theft is reported to the police department or sheriff of the jurisdiction in which the owner resides. Provides that the Department of State Police shall revoke and seize a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card previously issued under this Act if the Department finds that the person to whom such card was issued possesses or acquires a firearm and does not submit evidence to the Department of State Police that he or she has been issued in his or her name a liability insurance policy in the amount of at least $1,000,000 specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person. Effective January 1, 2010.

This shouldn’t really come as any surprise. I’m positive that former Illinois Senator and current President Barack Obama will back, and perhaps mimick at the federal level, this legislation. Based on his previous gun control positions, this is the perfect solution. Since the Supreme Court ruled the right of citizens to own firearms, the only other way around it is to make them too expensive to own.

When President Obama was running for the Illinois State Senate he filled out a questionnaire in which he states that he supports banning “the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns” and “assault weapons”. What exactly is an assault weapon anyway? It’s just the scary term that liberals use to frighten the American public about certain types of firearms. Their actually automatic and semi-automatic firearms, not assault weapons. I could go on and on, but that’s not the point of this.

Residents in Illinois better start contacting their state representatives if they want to retain their rights to owning guns without meddling by the government. Placing a requirement to maintain liability insurance of $1 million is absurd and will make it so that very few people can even afford to own one – at least “legally”. Your rights are being ripped from under you and you may not even notice it.

  1. Liberal gun-phobics have failed to eliminate the 2nd Amendment, and failed to so damage the Supreme Court (but it is only a matter of time) to the degree that it would not preserve the right of citizens to own firearms. As you said, the attacks therefore, have increasingly come in the form of making firearms too expensive to own. Next will be the inevitable increase in punishing Sales Taxes levied on not only guns, but ammunition and/or reloading supplies. They will make the tax on Alcohol or Tobacco look like nothing. And let’s not fail to mention the attempts to require the encoding of every single round of ammunition with a serial number.

Our rights will die with a legislative whimper as neo-Marxism continues to entrench itself.

At this point, my only last one ray of optimism comes from the fact that you CJ, and hundreds of thousands such as yourself, have pledged their lives not to some political figurehead, but to the protection of the Constitution of the United States of America. I see a day coming, when we as citizens will all be pressed to decide if that is a pledge we can live up to.

    • I pledge here and now, bro, with my chain of command possibly reading, that I REFUSE to take up arms against my nation. I REFUSE to fight for trampled Constitution. I pledge to leave military service and join my state militia in order to truly protect my countrymen’s rights!

  2. Hell, most organizations that you join have a liability policy.

My rocket club has one. They’re really quite cheap. The NRA has an insurance policy, but its very small. There is a purchasable secondary liability insurance for like 70 bucks/year.

Yes, you shouldn’t HAVE to, but the amount is so small, its really not that big of a deal.

    • $1 million policy is small, Bob?! Are you kidding me? Here’s the difference between the NRA, your rocket club, other clubs, and this. We joined those clubs of our own free will understanding that membership has fees. A RIGHT cannot be infringed upon. Forcing people to take out an insurance policy to own a gun is exactly the same as saying you can’t vote if you’re a minority female. It places limits on rights.

  3. “The amount is so small” … okay, how about a million dollar insurance policy for owning a steak knife? How about a baseball bat? How about a brick (some of us remember when thugs killed a truck driver with bricks)?

Then again … how about this … some of us have even been trained to kill with … ready for this … bare hands?

Does a gym that helps build strong bodies cause rape and murder? … just asking …

    • Much better than I said it!

      • Thanks, CJ.

When this former Marine was in his prime, he didn’t need an ‘equalizer’. Now that he is ‘old’ he wonders why he can’t have a weapon to protect himself. Clearly the police can’t be everywhere. Taking away his gun does not stop crime … letting him carry the gun DOES stop crime …

  4. BTW, these gun-o-phobics aren’t really liberal. Historically haven’t both liberals and conservatives believed in freedom to do what you want until it hurts someone else? … just asking …

    • I am not going to get in a semantics quibble over the current common usage of the word “liberal.” But as applied to the democratic left it can certainly be construed as an oxymoron.
