U.S. Congressman Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) today voted to include language in the FY2010 Department of Homeland Security appropriations conference report prohibiting the transfer of terrorist detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the United States. The Republican motion was adopted by a vote of 258-163. Tiahrt has helped lead efforts in the House to block the Obama administration from transferring or releasing detainees on American soil.

“Since the President first announced he would close Guantanamo Bay, the American people and Republicans have been in vehement opposition to the transfer or release of terrorists detainees in our communities,” said Tiahrt. “After repeated attempts to hold Democrats accountable for this misguided policy, I am pleased we secured enough votes in the House to pass this provision. Now it is up to conferees and the Obama administration to decide if they are going to ensure the safety of our communities or if they will continue to pursue bringing remorseless terrorists to America.”

Other provisions included in the Republican motion that were adopted by the House:

· Adding terrorist detainees on the “No Fly List”
· Insisting on Senate language prohibiting the release of detainee photos
· Requiring that the Homeland Security Appropriations conference report be available for 72 hours for the public and Members of Congress to read before a vote.
