A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
Sudsy, over at the Trend Nemesis blog wrote a piece a few days ago about the purpose and duties of the militia in this country. Here is a small excerpt of that:
The Founders intent for Militias had nothing to do with men gathering around charismatic leaders that spouted the right words, and everything to do with ensuring that the States had the ability to call up men to arms in times of crisis, and that they had a cadre of professional soldiers in the ‘Organized Militia’ who could train the the mass of ‘Un-Organized Militia’ who would be called up for service to the State during times of crisis. Clearly, a Militia is accountable to the people of the State through the Governor, State Legislature, and State and Federal Regulations (criminal code and the UCMJ) depending on the crisis.
…
In modern times, many State Militias became melded into a newer idea, a fusion of their traditional role as USC Title 32 State units and USC Title 10 Federal units in 1903 with the passing of the passing of the Militia Act of 1903, or Dick Act. The Dick Act created the formalized National Guard that today provides over 353,000 Soldiers for both Federal and State service across the entire US and its territories. Several states kept their State Guards, Home Guard, and State Defense Force units in tact, especially during World War I when they found their National Guard units Federalized and sent overseas and they had no one else to call upon when crisis hit. A large motivation for the Dick Act was the Spanish American war, where the US Government could only ask State Militias to volunteer for overseas service in Cuba and the Philippines; and those that did volunteer had a mix of training and equipment that proved to be a logistical strain on the Federal forces that had to supply them. In order to minimize the difficulties, what became the National Guard Bureau of the then War Department was born.
The entire piece is wonderfully researched and gives the reader an good idea of the true intent behind militias. You’ll find upon reading it that the reality of militias and media’s perception are two different things. Unfortunately, most Americans don’t take the time to understand what a militia is and instead just seem fit to enjoy their ignorance perception that is force-fed to them by a government worried about their stranglehold on the citizenry and a complicit, lock-step media.
Recent developments in the media have once again brought the term “militia” to the forefront, though both government officials and the media are once again trying to stigmatize the Constitutional groups. The FBI, BATFE, and other law enforcement groups raided some groups in Michigan and surrounding states and labeled them militias, when in reality they were nothing even close. In fact, most of those rounded up were involved in religious activities and resembled cults more than militias. Even the real Michigan Militia has spoken out against this label that unfairly puts the spotlight on patriotic Americans who voluntarily contribute to militias in the unlikely eventuality they may be needed. The so-called Hutaree zealots were formed to prepare “for the end time battles to keep the testimony of Jesus Christ alive,” according to their website.
I find it interesting that none of the Muslim groups that espouse violence are not considered militias, but extremist organizations. Why aren’t the Hutaree being labeled as the extremist group they are instead of insulting organized militias that are present in all 50 states? I have a suspicion.
In late 2009, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a plan to reverse the United States’ stance on a treaty to regulate arms:
The United States reversed policy on Wednesday and said it would back launching talks on a treaty to regulate arms sales as long as the talks operated by consensus, a stance critics said gave every nation a veto.
The decision, announced in a statement released by the U.S. State Department, overturns the position of former President George W. Bush’s administration, which had opposed such a treaty on the grounds that national controls were better.
That treaty, dubbed “The illicit trade in small arms and light weapons in all its aspects,” mandates that owners of small arms be registered in a United Nations database, called “the International Tracing Instrument.”
In 2006, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan stated that “our priorities are effective enforcement, better controls and regulations, safer stockpiling, and weapons collection and destruction. To halt the destructive march of armed conflict and crime, we must stop such purveyors of death” in relation to arms control globally (emphasis mine). This is the image used on the United Nations website:

Do you notice the TYPES of weapons being crushed? They aren’t so-called “assault rifles” or “machine guns” (as the NY Daily Press calls them). They aren’t REAL machine guns or grenade launchers or RPG. They are pistols, shotguns, and what appears to be hunting rifles.
So, my question to you is, is the United Government planning to first eliminate our militias so that they can easily take our guns? By stigmatizing real militias, they seek to gain acceptance from the citizenry for their overreaching acts. So, let’s start the discussion…

There will be one or more false flags within the lower 48. This will enable the President to implement the executive orders that are in place to suspend civil liberties, confiscate all civilian owned weapons and dismis The Congress. And have the Executive Rule the Country. Just remember the Gun Control Act of 1968 was patterned by Sen. Dodd after the gun control act of 1938 as passed in Germany! Most Americans are not even aware that DHS has established a 100 mile Constitution Free Zone from the borders of the US. (Look it up on Google!

The only part I agree with in the Gun Control Act of 1968 is the prohibited persons part.
Little story about that…
A buddy of mine had his federal dealer’s license. He only did it part time, as a side income, and made some decent money at it.
His wife cheats on him. They can’t reconcile, and he files for divorce.
She cries in front of a judge and says she’s afraid of him.(Completely bogus. This guy wouldn’t hurt a fly.) Judge buys it and files a restraining order.
Goodbye license. Goodbye every single gun he owned. Goodbye business.
And she had the nerve to file a claim on half of the business she destroyed by her restraining order.
Thankfully, the restraining order was tossed out. But not before all of his guns were destroyed. He had to reapply for his license, and had to explain what happened with the order when he did. He almost didn’t get it back.

I agree. These are not “small arms” by definition. Somebody has things seriously messed up. But then, this is something I’ve always disagreed with.
Saw a bumper sticker that sums up my beliefs today.
‘Gun Control is a Steady Hand.”

Love the bumper sticker!

It certainly is rather frightening putting the bits and pieces together and finding what is really going on these days. Sometimes is a rather lonely existence when we have to stand alone because people who we thought we could trust that once carried the Constitutional banner flee to the extremes out of touch with reality; while those who are elected flee the extremes of power grabbing, undermining the Constitution embracing the path of tyrannical Socialist, Fascist, and Communist ideals of government controlled and regulated existence from cradle to grave.

I thank the Lord above that our country has literally Millions of UNregistered firearms in the possession of many true, Patriotic Americans!

This is meant to address small arms and light weapons? Okay, hold on. What do they mean? Because what I see here are –as you’ve said, hand guns and hunting rifles.
This is… one of those bills made to appease a certain group of people while doing nothing to address bigger issues in some countries –like poverty, child soldiers, child slavery, the sex slave trade, and numerous other deep and dire circumstances. Let’s say someone were to draw one of those big diagrams showing a relationship between all of the above and small arms: does crushing them make the others magically go away?
Furthermore, why should Yan and Bebe of Iowa be required by to register their handguns in a United Nations database –which is bound to be prone to being hacked? And what to their handguns or rifles have anything to do with the number of illicit weapons being smuggled into the “stans,” through Russia, China, or Africa? I don’t get these types diagrams, if you know what I mean.
In regards to the militias, I think you’ve done a very good job ascertaining the difference between a legitimate militia and a group that isn’t.
Question for you: Is the Border Patrol considered a militia? What about the Minute Men?
Or were they both labeled militias by big media?

Unfortunately, anything with the “militia” label is automatically considered to be bad. I think that’s a shame.
But also understandable. In a way. People hear militia and think “Aryan Nation” and the KKK.
I’m -NOT- saying its right. its not. But I can understand why people think that. They think about another Oklahoma City bombing. Just like say Muslim and they think 9/11.
Its not right. And I, for one, would like to see it change. Unfortunately, forming any kind of militia around here is a waste of time. We’re packed in like sardines here. The state owns all of the open land.

Based on the website referenced (http://www.un.org/events/smallarms2006/), this is an effort of what to do with (at least partially) arms that are seized as part of a law enforcement action. Putting them on pavement and running them over is an option. Perhaps sell them on the open market and make the UN actually make a profit for once. or do what NYPD does here and melt them and through them into the the ocean.
