A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
For what appears to be a first, the border town Ciudad Juarez was rocked by a car bomb. For those that aren’t up on your geography, Ciudad Juarez is the sister city for El Paso, Texas. From Fort Bliss, you can literally see Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez. I’ve been there and it was a dump before, but now the drug cartels are taking over and getting a little help from Al Qaeda and other Islamic extremist groups.
Prior to the bomb being detonated, federal police and paramedics were lured to the scene by a phone call reporting that shots were fired at a major intersection and a municipal police officer lay wounded at a major intersection, Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes. The latest proof is in their use of car bombs as a tactic. Just watch this video:

So, while our government is completely lax at enforcing and securing a border that is allowing criminals, gangs, thugs, and terrorists to freely cross into our sovereign territory, we’re working hard to ensure that LEGAL Americans’ civil rights are being further eroded with intrusive body scans. Our government bends over backwards coming up with ways to search its own people with hefty pricetags and erosion of civil liberties, but refuses to find ways of stopping the violence happening right over our border from spilling onto our lands. So much for the 4th Amendment protections of our Constitution; not that our government cares about any of the others either.
Ciudad Juarez, a town that you can spit on from El Paso, TX, is home to a plethora of violence that is threatening American citizens. In addition to this car bomb, there are gunfights in the border town of Nuevo Lareda, Torreon, and Sinaloa. And instead of addressing this as an issue of national security as Arizona did in enacting its law, this country’s leaders want to political race games with the issue.
If we don’t do something, these attacks won’t be happening across the border. We won’t have to just worry about stray bullets hitting our city halls. We’ll be fighting to get them back over the border!

And the border doesn’t leak…it pours like a sieve.

I need to make sure that everyone understood that I liked the comment that was made, not the fact that there was a car bomb!!! I agree, something needs to be done to stop this, before it get’s out of hand like the on line scams that are getting way out of hand because NO ONE in the USA wants to do anything about it including the Secret Service!!!! And that came right from the mouth of one of the agents I spoke with on the phone. So I don’t embarress the agent, I will not put his name on this reply…

I lived in El Paso for 4 years when Dad was stationed at Bliss in the mid-80s. I wasn’t comfortable going to Juarez then (only went once, during the day with family to the markets when we had family visiting from out of town), but I would never even consider it now. You couldn’t pay me enough money to live in El Paso today. I can say I’m glad I’m not “forced” to by virtue of not being a military dependent anymore…

I gre up in Ciudad Juarez and am very sad to see what has happened in the years since I left. I agree that the US should be concerned but it makes me mad to see the hateful way you describe my home town. Not everyone living in Juarez is a criminal and the normal people there are victims of crime and corruption.
The US spends so much money to start a war in Iraq while Mexico drowns in crime. Not to mention the fact that the only reason the cartels even exist is the love American citizens have for illegal drugs. So yes, do something!!! The normal, decent citizens of Mexican border cities are tired of having to pay for America’s love affair with illegal drugs with their loves.

I recently visited El Paso TX, Theres a sign near Ft.Bliss, that says something about protecting our country, I laughed. I appreciate what our soldiers do, but they aren’t allowed to protect our country at our borders and the cartels and those that would do us harm know it.
The cartels should open Drug Resorts in Mexico so those americans that want it can go to them, that would curb the traffic and maybe stem the violence between the cartels, because everyone knows that there are plenty of customers and plenty of drugs to go around.

That is ironic, isn’t it?

I served in Fort Bliss twice in my 10 years in the Army. You hit the nail on the head when you said it was a dump. And still is. When I got there both times, the first thing I was told was to stay on our side of the border. I went there one time and I never thought about going back again. I can understand people wanting to get out of there, I don’t agree with doing it without proper papers. Even back in the 80s you always saw something on the news about something happening in Juarez concerning an American Soldier being robbed or whatever. Drugs is big business over there. I believe our Homeland Security isn’t doing what they can to stop the flow of traffic of illegal aliens. I love my freedom, as well as my Country. I don’t like sharing it with people here for the free handouts.
