Since 2001, over 1.5 million Soldiers have served in combat in support of OIF/OEF. This fact is not a surprise to anyone. Neither is it a surprise that our complacent and agenda-driven national media will bend over backwards to publicize the number of troops killed or the few bad apples within the military that have violated laws, rules and regulations to make the rest of us look bad.

What they DON’T focus on – that the country is ignorant about – are the GREAT things that our troops have done in combat. In WWII, our media and military did a GREAT job of highlighting the valorous acts of its troops. Those that earned medals were paraded through the streets and profiled. They were guest stars on popular television programs. More people are probably aware of what the number 5,582 means but have no idea what the number 398 means.

398 is a MUCH smaller number than the 5,582 troops that have been killed in combat since 2001. But, that’s how many troops have been awarded a Silver Star medal in the same amount of time. Anti-war idiots have no problem putting the names of those fallen on silly crosses, t-shirts, websites, etc. But where are the names of our valorous troops?

Thank goodness for local media and military papers like the Leaf Chronicle, Fort Campbell’s local paper.

Col. Dominic Caraccilo, acting senior commander for Fort Campbell, pins the Silver Star on the uniform of Sgt. John Giasullo, a combat medic in the 4th Brigade Combat Team, Friday during a ceremony at Fort Campbell. (Jake Lowary/The Leaf-Chronicle)

SGT John Giasullo is a combat medic and was in a five-vehicle convoy near Shebak Kheyl, Afghanistan in July 2008 when an improvised explosive device flipped an ANA vehicle into a riverbed, killing one soldier and injuring four others.

Giasullo ran to the destroyed vehicle and began firing back at enemy fighters who were now shooting at the crippled vehicle, Giasullo and the four wounded ANA soldiers.

Friday, he was presented with a Silver Star for his gallantry in action. You can read the rest of the story HERE

  1. The Leaf-Chronicle does a fantastic job with Ft. Campbell stories (even ran one recently about soldiers rescuing flood victims in Afghanistan, which was great to see).

It’s probably pretty standard to find a lot of supporters in towns by an installation, but I am consistently impressed by the entire city of Clarksville and their truly amazing support and compassion for the soldiers and families here. We love Clarksville!
