A SOLDIER'S PERSPECTIVE
THE WEB'S LEADING MILITARY BLOG SINCE 2004
President Obama met with General Petraeus and Afghan President Hamid Karzai this weekend. They aligned the US approach on the way forward in Afghanistan, particularly on a transition to full Afghan lead that will begin in early 2011 and will conclude in 2014. So, terrorists, if you’re listening, that’s 2014! Remember that! Here are a few photos from the meeting.
In reality, the only thing that the meeting did was highlight the very different disputes between the two nations. Karzai wants private security firms out of the country. Petraeus believes they are necessary. Karzai doesn’t want troop raiding the homes of suspected insurgents. Obviously, we consider them essential to our counterterrorist strategy. Karzai wants a reduction in the number of troops, but the current numbers are important to maintaining peace and stability while the Afghan forces are being built.
